Is a PG year right for you?

Cheshire Academy's PG students recently visited Metlife Stadium.

It’s your senior year, and you’re thinking about college. Are you ready? Not all high school seniors are, and there’s a program that’s perfect for those students who need another year of high school. It’s called the PG year, or postgraduate year, and it’s offered at many of the best boarding schools in the world. Is it right for you?

A PG year could improve your academic record.

Applying to college is an increasingly competitive process, and top schools only take the best of the best. If you’re not sure your academic record is up for the challenge, then you might consider a PG year, also known as the postgraduate year, at a top boarding school. This extra year of high school gives you a chance to improve your grades and better prepare yourself for a successful college career.

A PG year could help you up your game and get recruited for college sports.

If you’re an aspiring athlete hoping to compete at the collegiate level, the PG year can be the perfect way for you to position yourself as a top recruit. Boarding schools offer postgraduates another year to become stronger, faster, and more skilled in their sports. The college counseling departments will work with you to find the top colleges for you, and help you apply. Schools like Cheshire Academy regularly offer showcases and opportunities to play in front of college recruiters and coaches. At Cheshire Academy, about one-third of recent graduates went on to play sports at the collegiate level.

A PG year can help diversify your college resume and make your college application more competitive.

Maybe you haven’t been as active in high school as your peers, and you’ve limited yourself to attending class and maybe one sport. The PG year at boarding school is the perfect way to diversify your college resume and make your application more enticing to admission officers. Boarding schools are known for their depth of offerings, including arts, clubs, sports, and activities. Use the PG year to log some community service hours, try a new sport, explore the arts, learn a new language, or take on a leadership role. You’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish in just one year.
