What are the reasons that families decide to go to boarding school? Every family is different; however, there are some common factors that determine whether or not someone decides to go to boarding school.
Because nearby public schools may have low scores
In the United States, most of the time where you go to school is determined by where you live. If you happen to live in a district with a low school ranking, it might make more sense to investigate a boarding school. For example, New Haven, Connecticut has some schools with a 1 ranking-- the lowest score! Certainly parents who live there might look into other school options for their children.
Because you’re interested in a specific, hard-to-find program
Some students have very specific interests that they want to pursue at a higher level. For example, a student who is a star soccer player might be looking only for schools with strong soccer programs and a history of successfully placing college athletes. If you have a passion for photography, dance, visual art, theater, or even an academic program like the International Baccalaureate® Program, your best chance for pursuing those interests is to research boarding or private schools for the best fit.
Because you want to make friends from around the world
If you go to boarding school, your roommate could be from a different state, a different region, or even a different country. You’ll learn so much about the world from day-to-day conversations, plus you’ll have friends no matter where you go.
Because you actually want to enjoy your classes
Private schools are free from federal education mandates and state-sponsored fill-in-the-bubbles testing. That means boarding school classes don’t have to focus on what’s going to be on the test. Instead, they can work with students to develop critical thinking through hands on learning, which is exactly what colleges want their students to know. By the time you head to college, you’ll be several steps ahead of your classmates.
Because there’s always something really fun to do
At boarding school, you’ll never run out of things to do. Although at Cheshire Academy, we try to make sure our students aren’t over-scheduled, the truth is that there’s always somewhere to be or something to do. Every student is required to choose an activity to do in the afternoon, like a sport or theater, and we have almost 50 options to choose from! Not to mention, with so many sports there’s always a game that you can watch to root for your friends. Plus, there are shuttles to nearby shopping malls, theme parks like Lake Compounce or Six Flags, movie trips, themed dinners, inter-school dances, and more!
What are you reasons to go to boarding school? No matter what they are, the steps for choosing the best boarding school remains the same. Good luck!
