What is a Boarding School Open House?
Open House at a boarding school is an organized event hosted by the admission office. This is a chance for a large group of prospective students and their families to come to campus and get a preview of boarding school life.
What happens during Open House?
The event will vary from school to school, but many independent schools, both boarding schools and day schools, will offer a program that includes a campus tour, student and faculty panels, and meetings with folks from admission, student life, and athletics. Some schools will offer prospective students a chance to visit classes, learn more about financial aid and scholarship opportunities, and special presentations on signature programs or college counseling. For Cheshire Academy, signature programs include the popular IB Program and Roxbury Academic Support.
Who attends Open House?
Prospective students and their families attend Open House as visitors. If you’re not sure if you’re ready to apply to a school, an Open House at boarding school can be a great first step to learn more.
Why should I attend an Open House?
Open House gives you a great preview into life at the boarding school you’re considering applying to, and you get a chance to meet other prospective students. You’ll also meet students, teachers, admission officers, and other people at the school you are visiting. Here at Cheshire Academy, your parents will also have a chance to talk to students, teachers, and even parents of students currently enrolled. This is a perfect opportunity to ask questions and hear questions from the other attendees.
Does attending an Open House mean I have to apply?
Attending an Open House doesn’t have to mean you’re serious about applying to a school. This is a chance for you to explore the boarding school and be as involved as you want to be in the experience. You can always attend an Open House and then later request a second personal visit if you want to spend more time on campus.
Just make sure you register early, as many schools have limited space and close registrations well before the event date. Don’t miss out!
