For parents who are interested in learning more about social media, what it is, the major platforms, and how different groups are using it, there are a few must-follow social media blogs. Here are our recommendations and why we think they are important to follow.
We like Social Media Today because you can find a lot of information across all facets of social media. A mix of editorial and contributed topics, the site breaks up social media among categories, like marketing, technology and social business. Even better, the site has a category for webinars, which spotlight industry professionals talking about a variety of topics.
While Social Media Examiner is more focused towards businesses and brands, it tends to be one of the first to break helpful news about social media platforms, especially their constant changes. For example, a recent story shows how you can now run ads on both Facebook and Instagram. So, if you're interested in breaking social media news, try Social Media Examiner.
When it comes to social media, there a lot of parents concerned for the well-being of their children. Going beyond just social media, Common Sense Media has a very helpful section that spotlights basics when it comes to the safety of teens and their digital footprints and identities. Topics like what age should kids be before getting on platforms like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter or how do you keep up with the latest apps are very helpful reads, especially when you're just kidding in to your children and social media.
We’re not huge fans of one stop shop guides for anything, but Moz.com has a great one for social media, especially for beginners. Acting much like a free ebook, the guide walks you through everything from social media best practices to specifics on each major platform. While a bit outdated in some places, it's still a good all-inclusive read.
Cheap plug! Yes, we listed ourselves, but for good purpose. We specifically focus on questions parents have about teens and their social media usage, as well as breaking news about social media in general. So if you haven't already, subscribe to this blog or follow Cheshire Academy's social media channels for updates.
